The federal government of Nigeria has directed cable television service providers, MultiChoice, to suspend the enforcement of its latest hiked tariffs on various bouquets on its Digital Satellite Television, DSTV.

The order was released Tuesday by Mr Armstrong Idachaba, the Acting Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

The order was also echoed by the Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who also announced that the Federal government is preparing to smash DSTV 's Sporting Rights Monopoly.

The pair spoke at the National Assembly while briefing ad hoc committee members to look into the tariff hike.

“I want to agree, with the Committee and call on DSTV to suspend the hike in tariffs”, Idachaba, said when pushed by the Committee.

Mr Mohammed also told lawmakers earlier that he had already signed a code to break MultiChoice 's monopoly in the country saying "our changes to the Broadcasting Act would influence the break in MultiChoice 's monopoly. It is in our strong national interest to amend Section 628 of the Broadcasting Act.

The Chairman of the House Ad-hoc Committee and other legislators who questioned the Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed on the new payment template issued by Multichoice for DSTV subscription payment decried the high tariff costs.

He said the House viewed the rise in satellite television subscription prices on the Pay As You Go system as an affront that must be suspended immediately.
