Sunday Jackson: Adamawa Family Seeks Pardon for Convicted Farmer

Adamawa Family Seeks Pardon for Convicted Farmer – Sunday Jackson
In a remarkable act of mercy, the family of Buba Bawuro, a herdsman tragically killed in a violent dispute, has chosen forgiveness over retribution. They have formally appealed to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, requesting clemency for Sunday Jackson, the farmer convicted of Bawuro’s murder.
This surprising turn of events follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld Jackson’s death sentence, bringing him closer to execution. But in a powerful gesture of peace, the Bawuro family has stated that justice does not have to mean another life lost.
The appeal was made official through a heartfelt letter signed by Buba’s father, Ardo Bawuro. The letter was presented in the presence of two respected American humanitarian advocates—international human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe and Dr. William Devlin. Both men have been deeply involved in Jackson’s case since his conviction in 2021, tirelessly advocating for a just resolution.

The mediation took place at the royal palace in Numan, under the leadership of His Royal Majesty, the Hama Bachama. The traditional ruler played a vital role in fostering dialogue between both families, ensuring the meeting was conducted in an atmosphere of understanding and reconciliation.
In his emotional plea to Governor Fintiri, Ardo Bawuro expressed his family’s wish to prioritize peace over vengeance.
“Your Excellency, on behalf of myself and my entire family, I wish to acknowledge the good governance and the peace being enjoyed in the state under your leadership. The security situation has improved tremendously, and we sleep with our eyes closed. We appreciate this and continue to pray for your long life,” he wrote.
He continued, addressing his son’s tragic fate:
“The main reason for writing this letter is to appreciate the concern of the general public and the reactions of Nigerians and the whole world on the death sentence judgment in respect of my late son, Buba Bawuro, passed on Sunday Jackson.
“In this regard, Your Excellency should count us out of the judgment passed on the victim (Sunday Jackson). My son can never wake up again. Based on this fact, I am pleading for clemency on Sunday Jackson to be pardoned and set free. I wish His Excellency will consider my plea and grant my appeal.”
With his signature at the bottom of the letter, Buba Bawuro’s father made the family’s position clear—they are not seeking retribution, but rather forgiveness and reconciliation.

Sunday Jackson, the convicted farmer, has spent the past four years behind bars, facing an uncertain fate. His legal battle has been long and difficult, with multiple appeals failing to overturn his conviction. The Supreme Court’s final ruling left him with little hope.
But with the victim’s own family calling for his release, Jackson may now have a real chance at survival. Under Nigerian law, the governor has the power to grant pardons and commute sentences, especially in cases where public sentiment or acts of mercy play a role. The Bawuro family’s request for clemency could be the lifeline that Jackson so desperately needs.
The Justice for Jackson Joint Freedom Task Force (JJJFT), led by Ogebe and Devlin, has been leading the charge to save Jackson’s life. They welcomed the recent development with renewed optimism.
“It was an eye-opening interaction for us and gives great hope for peace in the land,” Ogebe said in response to the family’s plea. “We will share details of the royal meeting once the palace provides them. His Royal Majesty welcomed us and introduced us to his council of chiefs and the family members. We then rose for closer interaction with the families. We’re very excited at this outcome!”
The involvement of international human rights advocates underscores the global significance of this case. It is not just about one man’s fate; it is about setting a precedent for justice, forgiveness, and peace in a region frequently torn apart by farmer-herder conflicts.

All eyes are now on Governor Fintiri. With the victim’s family openly calling for clemency, the governor faces a major decision. Will he grant their request and spare Sunday Jackson’s life?
If he does, it could serve as a landmark moment for reconciliation and conflict resolution in Nigeria. It would send a strong message that justice does not always have to mean retribution—sometimes, it means healing wounds and forging a path toward peace.
For now, Jackson and his supporters can only wait and hope that mercy will triumph, and that Governor Fintiri will recognize this extraordinary act of forgiveness as a reason to spare his life.
