Adamawa State Targets Top Honors at 22nd National Sports Festival

Adamawa’s Bold Pledge for 22nd National Sports Festival Success
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has pledged unwavering support for the state’s athletes participating in the 22nd National Sports Festival, set for May 16 to 30, 2025, in Ogun State.
Represented by Chief of Staff Dr. Edgar Amos Sunday during the Unity Torch reception at the Government House in Yola, Fintiri expressed confidence in the state’s teams, emphasizing their potential to secure medals.
He underscored sports’ role in fostering unity and discipline and highlighted the government’s significant investment in a new stadium along Numan Road to boost local sporting activities.
Director of Athletics at the National Sports Commission, Mrs. Kiana Mbora, presented the Unity Torch, commending Adamawa’s commitment and preparations for the festival. She noted the torch’s tour aims to raise awareness for the upcoming event and praised the unifying power of sports across communities and nations.
The National Sports Festival, a biennial event organized by Nigeria’s Federal Government, serves as a platform to promote peace and cross-cultural affiliation among the nation’s 36 states.
Initiated in 1973, the festival aims to build a robust talent pool of athletes, enhance grassroots sports, and promote national unity. The 22nd edition, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” will be hosted in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following a rescheduling to May 2025 to allow for adequate preparations.
In preparation for the festival, several states have demonstrated their commitment. Bauchi State, for instance, confirmed its participation, with Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau highlighting the state’s history of excellence in athletics, football, hockey, boxing, and basketball. He emphasized the government’s support for its contingent and optimism for a strong performance.
The Unity Torch’s journey across the nation symbolizes the collective anticipation and unity the festival seeks to promote. President Bola Tinubu, during the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, described the torch as a symbol of peace, strength, and solidarity, underscoring the festival’s significance in fostering national cohesion.
Ogun State, the festival’s host, has reiterated its readiness to welcome athletes and officials. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, assured that the state is prepared to host the event, emphasizing the strategic timing to ensure all facilities meet the required standards.
The National Sports Festival stands as a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to sports development, unity, and the nurturing of young talents. As the event approaches, states like Adamawa are showcasing their commitment to these ideals, aiming for excellence and fostering a spirit of camaraderie among the nation’s athletes.
