The groups for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations were chosen during a star-studded event in YaoundΓ© on Tuesday evening. From January 9 to February 6, 2022, Cameroon will host the pandemic-affected event, Africa's top football showcase.

The Supper Eagles of Nigeria have been assigned to Group D of the biannual event, which will take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6.

Three-time champions Nigeria, who placed third in the 2019 edition in Egypt, are Egypt's strongest opponents.

In the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers, Egypt faced Nigeria twice, winning one and drawing the other. Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in a friendly a few months before the Nations Cup began in 2019.

Sudan returns to the competition for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals in 2012.

Egypt defeated Sudan 3-0 en way to winning the Nations Cup in 2008, but the latter shocked Egypt with a 4-0 victory in a friendly a few months later, which was their final meeting.

Guinea-Bissau, the group's lone outsider, was ousted in the group stage in both of its previous participation, in 2017 and 2019.

Egypt coach Hossam El-Badry was quoted saying '

"It's not an easy draw, but it's balanced. All our opponents have made significant progress,"

"I have the utmost confidence in the abilities of my players to live up to the expectations of our fans."

Egypt is attempting to capture their first Nations Cup title since 2010, when they achieved a historic hat-trick of consecutive victories.

They fell 2-1 to Cameroon in the 2017 final, but two years later, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after losing to South Africa on home soil.

"We are taking it one step at a time. For now, we are focusing on our next task in the World Cup qualifiers."

Egypt's World Cup qualifying campaign begins on September 2 against Angola at home before traveling to Gabon three days later.
