Angry tenant smashes landlord’s head with pestle in Enugu

Angry Tenant and Children Arrested for Brutal Attack on Landlord in Enugu
An intense dispute between a tenant and her landlord in Enugu took a violent turn when the tenant, alongside her two children, allegedly attacked the landlord with a pestle, leaving him with severe head injuries.
The shocking incident, which took place in the Coal City State, has sparked widespread concern among residents. The Enugu State Police Command confirmed that the suspects have been taken into custody while investigations are ongoing.
Dispute Turns Violent
According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began as a heated argument between the landlord and his female tenant over an undisclosed issue.
The argument quickly escalated into physical violence when the woman, in a fit of rage, grabbed a pestle and struck the landlord on the head.
Her two children reportedly joined in the attack, further injuring the landlord before neighbors intervened.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
A witness, who pleaded anonymity, described the scene as horrifying.
“I heard loud screams and rushed outside. We saw the landlord lying on the ground, bleeding profusely from his head. The woman and her children had already fled the scene, but the neighbors caught them before they could escape,” the witness recounted.
Police Confirm Arrests
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the arrest of the woman and her children.
He assured the public that the suspects were in custody and would face the full weight of the law.
“The case is under thorough investigation. The suspects have been apprehended and will be charged accordingly once our findings are concluded,” Ndukwe stated.
He also warned against taking disputes into violent territory, urging citizens to seek peaceful resolutions or legal intervention in cases of disagreements.
Landlord Fighting for His Life
Meanwhile, sources at the hospital revealed that the landlord is in critical condition due to the severe head injuries sustained in the attack.
Doctors are monitoring his health closely, and he is receiving intensive medical care.
One of the victim’s relatives, speaking to reporters, expressed deep anger and sadness over the incident.
“How can someone be so heartless to attack another person like this, especially a landlord who provided her shelter? We just want justice to be served,” the relative said.
Community Reacts with Outrage
The news of the brutal attack has caused an uproar in the community, with many residents condemning the actions of the tenant and her children.
Some called for stricter measures against tenant-landlord disputes that turn violent.
A local resident, Mr. Obinna Okafor, shared his thoughts on the situation:
“This is unacceptable. If she had issues with the landlord, she should have reported it to the authorities. Now, her actions could lead to dire legal consequences for her and her family.”
Legal Implications
Legal experts have weighed in on the matter, explaining that the suspects could face serious charges, including attempted murder, assault, and causing grievous bodily harm. If found guilty, they could serve several years in prison.
Barrister Ifeanyi Nwosu, a legal analyst, stated:
“Under Nigerian law, an attack of this nature is a grave offense. If the landlord does not survive his injuries, the suspects may even face murder charges. This is why it is crucial for people to settle disputes legally rather than resorting to violence.”
As investigations continue, the Enugu State Police have assured the public that justice will be served.
The authorities have also urged residents to seek peaceful conflict resolution instead of taking the law into their own hands.
The case has become a stark reminder of the dangers of unresolved disputes and the need for proper legal channels in handling disagreements between landlords and tenants.
