The All Progressives Congress has concluded its ward congress across Adamawa State, with party officials declaring the exercise peaceful, transparent, and conducted in line with the party’s constitutional guidelines.
The congress, held across wards in the state’s local government areas, marks a key step in rebuilding the APC’s internal structures in a state where the party currently sits in opposition to the Fintiri-led PDP administration. Party officials who monitored the exercise on Saturday expressed satisfaction with how proceedings went on the ground.
Honourable Ephraim Abgwe, Chairman of the State Ward Congress Committee, who personally monitored selected centres across Yola North, Yola South, and Girei Local Government Areas, described the process as free and fair. “It reflects the growing strength and unity of the party in the state,” he said, commending members for their orderly turnout and active participation.
Abgwe also noted that adequate security arrangements put in place across the state contributed to the peaceful outcome, a detail that carries weight in a state still navigating complex security dynamics in several of its local government areas.
Before any ballot was cast, the party put its house in order. Honourable Mohammed Abdullahi Dada, Chairman of the APC Ward and Local Government Screening Committee, confirmed that all aspirants vying for ward positions were duly screened ahead of the congress, with only qualified candidates cleared to participate.
“The screening was carried out thoroughly and in line with the party’s guidelines, ensuring fairness and transparency,” Dada stated, emphasising that the process was designed to prevent the kind of internal disputes that have undermined party congresses elsewhere across the country.
Abgwe had earlier urged members to uphold internal democracy and abide by the party’s laid-down rules, a message that party officials say was largely heeded across the monitored centres.
What This Means Looking Ahead
The successful completion of the ward congress is the foundation on which all subsequent APC organisational activity in Adamawa will rest. Ward executives elected through this process will form the base of the party’s local government congresses, which are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
For a party rebuilding its footprint in a state it lost at the governorship level, credible internal elections matter as much as any campaign strategy. A party that cannot conduct its own congress without controversy has limited credibility asking voters to trust it with public office.
By that measure, Saturday’s exercise, at least as reported by the party’s own monitoring officials, represents a positive step. Independent verification of the process by civil society observers or the Independent National Electoral Commission was not referenced in the party’s account of the day’s events.
The APC did not provide a full breakdown of results or the number of wards where congresses were held as of press time. The Adamawa State APC Secretariat had also not responded to The Gazette News’s request for the total number of ward executives elected during the exercise.
