A gang of thugs assassinated Jovonel Mose around 1 a.m. this morning, according to Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph.

The offenders were Spanish-speaking, according to the official statement, but no additional information was provided.

Martine Mose, the first lady, was also hurt in the incident, according to the prime minister.

The prime minister’s statement reads:

“A group of individuals who have not been identified, some of whom were speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and fatally injured the Head of State.”

President Barack Obama was 53 years old at the time.

Bitter turmoil occurred in the Caribbean island earlier this year, with demonstrators demanding Mr Moise's resignation.

Thousands of protesters questioned the president's legality, claiming that his five-year tenure should have ended on February 7, 2021, exactly five years after his predecessor Michel Martelly resigned.

Mr Mose, on the other hand, claims he has one more year to serve because he took office on February 7, 2017.

The year-long wait was prompted by charges of electoral fraud, which resulted in the annulment of the 2015 election results and the holding of new elections, which Mr Mose won.
