Liverpool has decided on an agreement to sign Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara.

Over the past few weeks, Thiago, the midfielder, has been connected with a Premier League move as he tries to leave Bayern following their treble-winning season.

The two key rivals for his signature were Manchester United and the Reds, and talkSPORT understands that the transfer race was won by Liverpool.

The fee is about £27million (€30 m) and Thiago has to reach personal terms with Liverpool, but there is not expected to be any problems at this negotiating point.

Bayern wanted the exit of Thiago completed before the start of the new Bundesliga season which starts with Schalke visiting Bavaria on Friday.

After seven years during which he won seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, as well as four DFB-Pokals and the Champions League, Thiago, 29, will leave Bayern.

He played a key role in the treble-winning 2019/20 campaign of the German giants, which culminated last month in the triumph of Bayern's European Cup against PSG.

Before telling the club he simply decided to renege on the offer and leave the club, Thiago is alleged to have signed a four-year contract with Bayern earlier this year.

“It is a difficult situation,” said former Bayern presidet Uli Hoeness earlier this week.

“A while ago we agreed on a new four-year contract. Some days later he said: ‘I’m looking for a new challenge’. Which is totally okay.

“I think he obviously has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United or both of them. Now both clubs are bluffing, and no one has contacted Bayern Munich officially.

“From my point of view, that has no style. They’re trying to blackmail us, by waiting until the last week, when they’re going to make a cheap offer.”
