President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Students Loan Amendment bill into law, offering financial assistance to Nigerian students in tertiary institutions.

The bill was initially signed in June 2023, but its implementation faced delays due to various issues hindering its rollout.

The signing ceremony took place at the state house in the presence of the deputy president of the senate, Barau Jibrin, the minister of state for education, the minister of state for youth, other government officials, and aides to the president.

The president expressed his gratitude to the National Assembly for their expeditious handling of the bill, emphasizing that education is the tool to fight against poverty effectively.

He also stated his determination to ensure that education is given the proper attention necessary for the country, including skills development programs.

The National Students Loan Amendment bill aims to ensure that no one, no matter how poor their background is, is excluded from quality education and opportunity to build their future.

The bill’s implementation is expected to provide financial relief for Nigerian students, helping them to overcome financial barriers and access education.

The bill received separate considerations from the two chambers of the National Assembly committees on tertiary institutions and TETFund.

The signing of the bill into law is a step towards improving the education sector in Nigeria and providing equal opportunities for all Nigerian citizens.
