BREAKING: Sudan's Ex-President, al-Bashir Faces Death Sentence

The former head of state, who is scheduled to testify among 16 other witnesses, was already sentenced to two years for possessing foreign currency illegally.

Omar al-Bashir, the former Sudanese president, has been summoned to appear before a court on allegations of an alleged coup d'├ętat that he orchestrated over 30 years ago. The new indictment follows state prosecutors' office investigations.

According to reports, he appears before a court in Khartoum on Tuesday, July 21 and will be tried by a special jury composed of three judges.

He is facing the death penalty or life imprisonment for his role in the coup which brought him to power three decades ago when he overthrew Prime Minister Sadek al-Mahdi's democratically elected government.

As of June 1989. In a coup supported by Islamist ideologue Hassan al-Turabi, army brigadier Bashir seizes power. Thirty years later, economic demonstrations crumbled into an anti-government uprising that overthrew him in April 2019.

He is also the target of a warrant issued in Darfur by the International Criminal Tribunal for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
