Power Shift in Yola: Brigadier General Amechi Agwu Takes Over 23 Brigade Command

The winds of military leadership have shifted in Yola. Brigadier General Amechi Agwu has officially taken command of the 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, marking a new era for the unit charged with maintaining peace and security in Adamawa State and its environs.

The change of command ceremony, held at the Brigade Headquarters in Yola, was nothing short of ceremonial elegance. It was steeped in tradition, discipline, and symbolism—a hallmark of military culture. Key highlights included the formal signing of the handing and taking over notes, a farewell address, and the ceremonial lowering and hoisting of the Brigade flag. That final act—lowering one flag and raising another—was a strong visual of authority changing hands, and it wasn’t just for show. It meant business.

Outgoing Commander, Brigadier General Paul Zawaya, bowed out with grace and gratitude. He didn’t mince words. In his farewell remarks, he extended heartfelt thanks to the officers, soldiers, and civilian staff who stood by him during his tenure. Zawaya made it clear he didn’t do it alone—unity and cooperation were the glue that held the Brigade together. He also took a moment to tip his hat to the government and the people of Adamawa State. According to him, their unwavering support was instrumental in sustaining peace and security in the region.

But this wasn’t just about saying goodbye. Zawaya had a clear message: support the new man in charge with even greater zeal.

And that new man—Brigadier General Amechi Agwu—is wasting no time in showing he’s ready for the task ahead. He stepped into command with firm resolve and forward-thinking vision. Agwu declared his intention to not only sustain the good work done by his predecessor but to amplify it. He wants to beef up the operational effectiveness of the Brigade and, more importantly, ensure that the citizens of Adamawa feel safe under his watch.

His speech wasn’t a political dance either. It was direct, mission-oriented, and filled with expectations. He urged all personnel to raise the bar in discipline, professionalism, and commitment. For the people of Adamawa, his message was simple but powerful: the 23 Brigade is here for your protection, and under his leadership, that promise will not falter.

This kind of change is more than ceremonial fluff—it matters. Leadership transitions like this reinforce the Nigerian Army’s dedication to continuity and professionalism, especially in a volatile region like the North East where the stakes are high.

With insurgency threats still looming and pockets of instability present, leadership at the top makes a huge difference. Agwu’s assumption of duty could bring renewed energy and strategy to counter threats and deepen security cooperation with local communities and stakeholders.

Now, all eyes are on Brigadier General Amechi Agwu as he steps into a role that demands courage, strategy, and a firm hand. And if his words are anything to go by, he’s already charting a course towards stronger military-civilian relationships, smarter security operations, and a more secure Adamawa.
