Work Where Journalism Still Matters
The Gazette News is looking for people who believe that journalism done right — independently, accurately, humanely, and with impact — is one of the most important things a person can do with a career.
We are building Nigeria’s most trusted independent digital news organisation from the ground up. That means we are not looking to fill seats. We are looking for journalists, editors, researchers, technologists, and communicators who want to be part of something that matters — and who are willing to do the hard, careful, sometimes unglamorous work that real journalism requires.
If that describes you, this page is for you.
Who We Are Looking For
The Gazette News values the following qualities above all others in every candidate, regardless of role:
Commitment to accuracy. We verify before we publish. Always. Candidates who move fast and fix later are not a good fit for The Gazette News. Candidates who move carefully and get it right are exactly who we are looking for.
Editorial independence. Our journalists do not carry political party cards, do not take gifts from sources, and do not accept direction from anyone outside the editorial team. Candidates who understand why that matters — and who have already lived by those principles — are who we want.
Curiosity about Nigeria and the world. The best journalism comes from reporters who are genuinely interested in the people, systems, and events they cover. Not interested in the story as a career stepping stone. Interested in the story because the story matters.
Clear, human writing. Every piece of journalism published on The Gazette News is written in plain, direct, human English. We do not publish press release language, bureaucratic padding, or AI-generated filler. Candidates who can write — clearly, precisely, and with the reader always in mind — stand out immediately.
Digital fluency. The Gazette News is a digital-native publication. Our journalists understand SEO basics, write for web and mobile audiences, use social media as a reporting tool, and are comfortable working in a digital-first editorial environment.

- Track record of bylined work in recognised Nigerian or African publications
Reporter — Business and Economics Status: Open Talent Pool
We are looking for a reporter to cover Nigeria’s economic and business landscape — CBN monetary policy, capital markets, banking sector developments, energy economics, agricultural commodities, and the lived economic experience of ordinary Nigerians navigating one of the world’s most volatile emerging market economies.
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of journalism experience in business, economics, or financial reporting
- Ability to read and interrogate financial documents, government budgets, and economic data
- Understanding of Nigerian macroeconomic fundamentals — naira, inflation, oil revenue, foreign exchange
- Ability to translate complex economic information into accessible, human-centred journalism
- Commitment to accuracy and source verification in data-driven reporting
Preferred:
- Economics, finance, or accounting educational background
- Experience covering CBN, SEC Nigeria, or Nigerian capital markets
- Relationships with economists, analysts, and financial sector professionals in Nigeria
Reporter — Africa and International Affairs Status: Open Talent Pool
We are looking for a reporter or correspondent to expand The Gazette News’s coverage of African continental affairs and global developments as they affect Nigeria and Africa. This role may be based in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa.
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of journalism experience in African or international affairs
- Strong knowledge of African political, economic, and security affairs beyond Nigeria
- Understanding of ECOWAS, the African Union, and continental integration processes
- Ability to write for a primarily Nigerian audience about stories happening beyond Nigeria’s borders

Preferred:
- Experience covering West African politics and the Sahel
- Network of sources in African capitals, multilateral institutions, or diplomatic circles
- Track record of filing from multiple African countries
Sub-Editor / Copy Editor Status: Open Talent Pool
We are looking for a meticulous, fast, and deeply knowledgeable sub-editor to review, edit, and prepare all editorial copy for publication on thegazette.ng. This is not a passive role. The sub-editor at The Gazette News is a critical final line of accuracy, clarity, and legal safety before any story reaches our readers.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of sub-editing, copy editing, or senior editorial experience in a newsroom
- Exceptional command of written English — including Nigerian English idiom
- Strong knowledge of media law in Nigeria — defamation, contempt of court, privacy
- Familiarity with SEO principles as they apply to editorial headlines and metadata
- Fast and accurate under deadline pressure
- Knowledge of The Gazette News house style or ability to internalise it quickly
Preferred:
- Experience with WordPress editorial workflows
- Familiarity with Yoast SEO or equivalent
- Background in both digital and print newsroom environments
Digital Producer / SEO Editor Status: Open Talent Pool
We are looking for a digital producer who understands both journalism and search engine optimisation — someone who can help The Gazette News reach the widest possible audience for our journalism without compromising the editorial standards that make that journalism worth reading.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in digital content production in a news environment
- Working knowledge of Yoast SEO, Google Search Console, and Google Analytics 4
- Understanding of news SEO principles — headline optimisation, meta descriptions, structured data
- Ability to write and edit to SEO standards without degrading editorial quality
- Familiarity with WordPress CMS
- Understanding of social media distribution strategies for news content
Preferred:
- Experience with Google News publisher tools
- Knowledge of structured data and JSON-LD schema for news
- Track record of growing organic search traffic for a news publication

The Gazette News commissions freelance journalism across all editorial sections on an ongoing basis. We are particularly interested in hearing from:
- Reporters based in Nigerian states outside Lagos and Abuja who cover local and regional stories with national significance
- Correspondents based in West Africa, East Africa, or Southern Africa
- Specialist writers with deep expertise in health, environment, technology, education, or justice
- Members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, USA, and Canada with access to diaspora-specific stories
- Data journalists and researchers with experience in Nigerian public data
Freelance rates are discussed individually. All freelance contributors are subject to The Gazette News Editorial Policy and must agree to our verification and right-of-reply standards as a condition of publication.
How to Apply
To apply for any role listed above or to submit your details for our talent pool, send the following to careers@thegazette.ng:
Subject line: [Role Title] Application — [Your Full Name]
Your application must include:
- A cover letter of no more than 400 words explaining why you want to work at The Gazette News, what you would bring to the specific role, and what you understand about what makes The Gazette News different from other Nigerian news publications
- Your CV — no longer than two pages — with your full employment history, educational background, and contact details for two professional referees
- Three published clips — links to three pieces of journalism you have published that you believe best represent your abilities. If you are a sub-editor or digital producer, provide examples of your editorial work in whatever form is most relevant
- A brief editorial pitch — one paragraph pitching a story you would want to investigate or write for The Gazette News if you were hired tomorrow. This is not a formal writing test. It tells us how you think about journalism
Applications that do not include all four elements above will not be considered.
What We Offer
The Gazette News is an early-stage, growing independent news organisation. We are transparent about what we can offer at this stage of our development and about the direction we are growing toward.
What we offer now:
- Editorial independence — your journalism will not be shaped by political or commercial interests
- A platform that is growing — your byline will be associated with a publication building real audience and real credibility
- Editorial mentorship and professional development — we invest in our journalists
- Flexible working arrangements for the right candidates
- The opportunity to help build something from an early stage — with the influence, experience, and recognition that comes with that
What we are building toward:
- Competitive market-rate salaries and contributor fees as the organisation grows
- Health and welfare benefits
- Pension contributions in line with Nigerian statutory requirements
- Formal editorial training and conference attendance
We believe in being honest with candidates about where we are. The Gazette News is growing. The opportunities here are real. The work is hard and the standards are high. If you are looking for a comfortable role in a well-resourced legacy newsroom, this is probably not the right place for you. If you are looking to do important journalism, build a reputation on your own terms, and be part of a publication that is genuinely independent — we want to talk.
Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
The Gazette News is committed to building a newsroom that reflects Nigeria in full — its geography, its languages, its ethnicities, its genders, and its generations. We actively encourage applications from journalists from all regions of Nigeria, including states and communities that are chronically underrepresented in national media coverage. We particularly welcome applications from women journalists, journalists from Nigeria’s Middle Belt and Northern regions, and journalists from communities whose stories rarely make national headlines.
We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, age, or any other characteristic protected under Nigerian law. We evaluate all applications on the basis of journalism ability, editorial judgment, and commitment to our values.
