Controversial Penalty Seals Club Brugge’s 2-1 Win Over Atalanta
A late, controversial penalty gave Club Brugge a 2-1 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off. Swedish forward Gustaf Nilsson won and converted the decisive spot-kick in injury time, leaving the Italian side furious with the referee’s decision.
Club Brugge started strong and took the lead early. In the 15th minute, teenage winger Chemsdine Talbi intercepted a loose pass and delivered a pinpoint cross to Ferran Jutgla. The Spanish forward struck a powerful right-footed shot into the top left corner, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
Atalanta struggled in the opening stages, but they gradually found their rhythm. Four minutes before halftime, Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic connected with Davide Zappacosta’s cross from the left wing, heading the ball past Simon Mignolet to level the score.
The second half was an intense battle as both sides pushed for a breakthrough. Atalanta had several chances, with former Chelsea duo Zappacosta and Juan Cuadrado forcing key saves from Mignolet. Midfielder Lazar Samardzic, on loan from Udinese, narrowly missed the target with a long-range strike.
As the match edged toward a draw, controversy erupted in stoppage time. Atalanta’s Swedish defender Isak Hien was marking his compatriot Nilsson when the referee, Halil Umut Meler, saw an arm hold and awarded a penalty to Brugge. VAR confirmed the decision, but Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was furious, protesting the call on the touchline.
Nilsson remained composed under pressure. He sent Atalanta goalkeeper Rui Patricio the wrong way and slotted the ball home to secure a crucial win for Club Brugge.
The Belgian side dominated early but failed to capitalize on their chances. Atalanta, who are still competing in the Serie A title race, improved after their equalizer and felt frustrated by the late penalty decision.
The tie remains open as both teams prepare for the second leg in Bergamo. The winner will face either Lille or Aston Villa in the last 16 of the competition.
