Council of State Unanimously Backs Tinubu Administration Amid Nationwide Unrest
In a significant show of support, the National Council of State has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This decision came during a high-level meeting held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, attended by former Presidents, Heads of State, top legislative leaders, and state governors.
The meeting saw the participation of prominent figures such as former President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan, who were present in person, while Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar joined virtually.
However, the absence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida was noted, with no official explanation provided.
The Council’s discussion focused on the recent nationwide protests, which have been driven by issues of hunger and governance concerns.
The Council described these protests as an “insurrection” aimed at an attempted regime change, rather than mere peaceful demonstrations.
Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, spoke to State House correspondents after the meeting, emphasizing the Council’s collective support for President Tinubu’s approach to governance.
He highlighted the Council’s approval of the economic progress reported by various ministers during the meeting.
Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, also addressed the media, stressing the Council’s commendation of President Tinubu’s resistance to any forceful attempts to undermine his government.
He underscored the importance of maintaining democratic processes, noting that leadership changes should occur through elections, not insurrections.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, provided the Council with an overview of the country’s security situation, particularly in light of the recent protests.
He reaffirmed the Council’s stance against any actions that could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy.
Additionally, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, presented an economic update, outlining the progress made under Tinubu’s administration in areas such as economic diversification and stability.
This vote of confidence signals a strong endorsement of President Tinubu’s leadership amidst ongoing challenges and underscores the Council of State’s commitment to supporting his administration.
