Hon. Victor Mela

Victor Mela, a member of the House of Representatives, has been convicted by a magistrate court in Wuse, Zone 6, Abuja, for supplying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with false information to allow him to contest the 2019 election.

Mela, who represents the Billiri / Balanga federal constituency, Gombe District, was accused by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police of lying under oath when filing the INEC form CF001 prior to the 2019 elections.

Nevertheless, after his counsel admitted the plea of allocutus, the presiding judge set a separate date for the sentencing of the politician, a plea for mercy concerning the court judgment.

Mela, the All Progressive Congress (APC) nominee, was proclaimed the winner of the House of Representatives election (Billiri/Balanga federal constituency) held in February 2019 by INEC.

While Mela's victory in the election was contested by Ali Isa, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, the National Assembly petition tribunal and the court of appeal, Jos Division, declared the APC candidate the duly elected representative of the federal constituency of Billiri/Balanga.
