Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s Visit Focuses on Economic Growth in Nigeria and South Africa
Today, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy embarks on a significant trip to Nigeria and South Africa, marking his first visit to Africa in this role. Aiming to forge stronger partnerships, Lammy’s visit emphasises mutual growth, climate action, and respect-based partnerships with African nations.
During his visit, Lammy will sign a groundbreaking strategic partnership with Nigeria, expanding cooperation on key areas such as job creation, climate action, security, and people-to-people ties.
He plans high-level discussions with President Bola Tinubu and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reinforcing a commitment to the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership to boost bilateral trade.
Lammy will also introduce a technical assistance package from British institutions like the Bank of England to support Nigeria’s economic modernisation.
In South Africa, Lammy will launch a UK-South Africa Growth Plan, aiming to bolster trade through market access programs and initiatives to create agricultural jobs.
South Africa remains the UK’s largest trading partner on the continent, and Lammy’s engagement seeks to build on this by enhancing collaboration on trade, climate, and security under an extended Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through 2030.
He’ll also attend the Earthshot+ conference, celebrating environmental innovation and announcing a new Biodiversity Challenge Fund to support climate action and sustainable growth.
Lammy’s approach signals a fresh, inclusive model for UK-Africa relations, grounded in long-term growth and active listening to Africa’s diverse needs.
