Edo 2020:Tension as Ogiemwonyi,Ize Iyamu’s synergy with others torment Obaseki
Welcome to our daily update on behind the scene towards the build-up to Edo 2020 elections coming up later in the year.
Presently the battle for Dennis Osadebe avenue is focused on the ruling party for obvious reasons. Obaseki who was elected under the ticket of the APC is however in a bitter feud with the party leaders in the state and at the national headquarters.
Obaseki has refused all entreaties to him for an amicable settlement of the crisis.
Obaseki rejected the Senate, House of reps and Governor’s forum committee set up to broker a peace initiative.
As the date for the party primaries draws near Obaseki has suddenly found himself in a state of confusion.
Who is in custody for the sales of the nomination form for the office of the governor? According to APC constitution, forms are sold at the National Secretariat of the party.
Obaseki is not even a member of the APC according to the National Secretariat so where does the Governor purchase his party form from?
Anyway, Obaseki’s plan B which is getting the ticket under the amalgamation of at least 30 political parties is sure to fly, but therein lies the problem.
The big four in Edo politics today have all come together and agreed to work in unity of purpose.
How can Obaseki face the big four?
Today the Big four is what is on the lips of every electorate in the state. Who are the big four and why are they a threat to Obaseki?
On the 16th of January, a press briefing was held announcing the political alignment of the four major political aspirants in the state, namely.
Engr. Christopher Ogiemwonyi (Former Minister of State, Works),
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu (Former Secretary to Edo State Government & Governorship Candidate),
Maj. Gen. Charles Airhivbere(Rtd) (Former Governorship Candidate),
Rt. Hon. Dr Pius E. Odubu (Former Deputy Governor).
The coming together of these men seemed like a fantasy but in reality, they have stepped up their game by even paying condolence visits together and attending rallies together.
Emphasis should be laid here that these same aspirants were the big four in the last Governorship election in 2016 and even Pastor Ize-Iyamu was the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP and it took the support of the other candidates behind Obaseki before he could defeat Pastor Ize-Iyamu in the general elections.
So let us meet the big four that have vowed to unseat Obaseki.
Eng Chris Ogiemwonyi
A charismatic and highly accomplished Petroleum Engineer, former Group Executive Director, Exploration and Production of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC; A former Minister of State for Works, a successful private businessman and philanthropist.
Engineer Chris Ogiemwonyi has since oiled his political machinery and reaching out to party stakeholders for their support.
He is a perfect administrator with an enviable track record and a dedicated party member.
An established entrepreneur, educationist, a grassroots farmer and an established businessman.
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu is an astute politician, strong in the grassroots network and well connected.
He is a politician that does not discriminate, highly de-trabalised, open to positive ideas, motivator of positive agenda for government, a respecter of elders and social values, a nexus of hope for Christians in Government and a crusader of fairness and social justice.

Maj. Gen. Charles Airhivbere
A retired major general in the Nigerian army, he has bagged several awards for his brilliance and character, particular attention to detail and incorruptibility. General Charles spent his years managing the finance of the Nigerian Army and not once was he found wanting.
He was the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2012 elections in the state and contested against Obaseki in the 2016 primaries of APC.
Rt. Hon. Dr Pius E. Odubu
He is a former Deputy Governor of Edo State (2012-2016) under the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the APC.
Odubu contested the Edo State 2016 governorship election but lost to the incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who the then governor (Oshiomhole) picked as his preferred candidate.
Dr Odubu is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, having been called to the bar in October 1986.
So we now know who the big four are, how Obaseki would be able to manoeuvre through this is yet to be seen.
