EFCC Officers Allegedly Steal Seized Gold and Cash Worth Over ₦1 Billion
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is facing a significant internal scandal.
Reports indicate that several officers have allegedly stolen seized assets, including gold bars and cash, valued at over ₦1 billion.
According to a report by BusinessDay, ten officers from the Lagos Zonal Command were detained after failing to account for critical operational items.
A security source revealed that the missing items included gold bars worth over ₦1 billion, jewelry, and between $350,000 and $400,000 in cash.
In a related incident, an officer from the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Office, identified as Polycarp, allegedly absconded with over $30,000 and other valuable exhibits.
He reportedly fled upon learning about an impending audit, leaving his telephone lines switched off and his whereabouts unknown.
These incidents have intensified scrutiny of the EFCC’s internal operations.
In 2024, the commission dismissed at least 27 officers for misconduct and fraudulent activities, including tampering with recovered assets.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement addressing these latest scandals, leading to public criticism regarding the agency’s internal accountability mechanisms.
These developments raise concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s premier anti-corruption agency and its ability to manage seized assets effectively.
