Erdoğan’s Urgent Call: 45 Lives Lost Amid Israel’s ‘Hateful Ambitions’ in Lebanon

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned Israel’s recent attacks in Lebanon, which he claims highlight Turkey’s deep concerns about Israel’s plans to escalate conflict in the region.

In a press conference in Istanbul on Saturday, according to Thurriyet Naily News, Erdoğan criticised Israel’s actions, likening them to those of a terrorist group. He stated, “With this attack (pager explosions in Lebanon), Israel demonstrated it has no civilian sensitivities; it can use any means to achieve its hateful ambitions.”

The president explained that the violence shows Israel’s intent to extend its operations across Lebanon and beyond. He accused certain Western nations of supporting Israel’s actions.

“This attack also indicates that Israel is extending its attacks throughout Lebanon and the region,” Erdoğan added. He emphasised that the region is now facing an “inexplicably huge crisis.”

Erdoğan urged the international community, particularly Western countries, to take action. He said they should “stop watching Israel’s heinous actions and take deterrent steps.”

The recent blasts in Lebanon resulted in at least 45 fatalities and injured over 3,250 individuals, including many children and women. The explosions occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday, triggered by “pagers” and “ICOM” wireless communication devices.

As of now, there has been no comment from Israel regarding the explosions.

Israel’s Ongoing Conflict in Gaza

Erdoğan further discussed the broader implications of Israel’s actions during his upcoming speech at the U.N. General Assembly. He plans to address the Summit of the Future, where he will advocate for reform in global governance, focusing on the U.N. Security Council and international financial systems. He stated, “I will emphasise the necessity for a more inclusive, fair, and effective structure.”

The president is scheduled to speak at the U.N. General Assembly on September 24. He intends to share Türkiye’s views on pressing issues affecting both the region and humanity. “I will specifically address the common actions that can be taken against the genocide in Gaza and Israel’s aggressive policies,” he asserted.

This year’s assembly is expected to see attendance from more than 130 heads of state and government from all U.N. member countries. Erdoğan expressed that the world, particularly the U.N., bears significant responsibility in addressing the Israeli actions in Gaza. He called for a permanent cease-fire and for humanitarian aid to flow freely. “We will remind our interlocutors of these once again during our visit,” he said.

Erdoğan also criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, “Netanyahu and his network resort to all kinds of provocations and incitement to implement their radical Zionist ideology.” He described the increasing attacks on the al-Aqsa Mosque as part of a “dirty scenario.”

He continued, “As Türkiye, we have repeatedly expressed the level of our sensitivity on this issue. Our position is the same today as well. Pressure on Israel must be increased further to prevent our region from being dragged into a massive catastrophe.”

Addressing the Syrian Conflict

On another front, Erdoğan spoke about the situation in Syria, stating Turkey’s willingness to engage with Bashar Assad to normalise relations. He mentioned, “We have also demonstrated our will to meet with Bashar Assad to normalise relations between Turkey and Syria. Now we are waiting for a response from the other side.”
