FG Greenlights N350bn Boost for Dams and Irrigation Projects Amid Flood Crisis
The Federal Government has approved over N350 billion to support dam projects and expand irrigation facilities across Nigeria, according to the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu.
Bagudu shared this news after offering condolences to the former EFCC boss, Abul-Rashid Bawa, in Birnin Kebbi on the loss of his mother.
He emphasised the growing threat of floods. “Flooding is a dramatic change. It’s a global challenge, and we’ve seen its impact in states like Borno,” Bagudu stated.
He noted that climate change is a pressing issue but praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s quick response.
“Thankfully, President Tinubu took proactive steps. Funds were distributed to states, with N3 billion allocated to each to tackle the effects of flooding,” Bagudu explained.
He added that the government had recently approved over N350 billion through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund to aid dams and expand irrigation facilities.
Bagudu also highlighted a significant investment in road infrastructure. “The Federal Executive Council approved N900 billion for the Kebbi section of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, the largest contract under this administration,” he revealed.
Another major project includes the construction of the Zaria Kala-Kala road in Koko/Besse Local Government, along with the previously awarded Melando-Warra road in Birnin Yauri.
“Kebbi is fortunate,” Bagudu said, pointing out that these projects, along with ongoing efforts in agriculture, healthcare, and education, will boost the state’s development.
He praised Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for his commitment to improving residents’ lives and responding swiftly to flooding.
“I commend the governor for providing relief to communities impacted by flooding and for encouraging farmers to continue cultivating crops to ensure food security,” Bagudu concluded.
