FG’s Educational Curriculum Upgrade: 15 Essential Skills for Primary and JSS Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant reform in the nation’s educational curriculum by introducing 15 skill acquisition courses for Primary and Junior Secondary Schools.

This new policy, set to commence in the 2025 academic year, aims to equip students with practical skills alongside traditional education.

According to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), students will select one skill from the list and receive both theoretical and practical training throughout their nine years of basic education, from Primary 1 to JSS 3.

The 15 skills introduced into the curriculum are:

  1. Plumbing
  2. Tiling and Floor Works
  3. POP Installation
  4. Event Decoration and Management
  5. Bakery and Confectioneries
  6. Hairstyling
  7. Makeup
  8. Interior Design
  9. GSM Repairs
  10. Satellite/TV Antenna Installation
  11. CCTV, Intercom Installation, and Maintenance
  12. Solar Installation and Maintenance
  13. Garment Making
  14. Agriculture and Processing (including crop production, beekeeping, horticulture, sheep and goat farming, poultry, and rabbit farming)
  15. Basic Digital Literacy (IT and Robotics)

To ensure the successful implementation of this policy, the government plans to train and retrain teachers across both public and private schools nationwide.

This preparation phase will include developing instructional guides and improving infrastructure to support the new curriculum.

The introduction of these skill acquisition courses aligns with Nigeria’s focus on fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance among its youth, especially in light of the country’s rising unemployment challenges.

By equipping students with practical skills, the government aims to make them self-reliant and competitive, aligning with global standards.

The policy has been approved by the National Council on Education and is scheduled for implementation in January 2025.
