Teams will now be allowed up to five substitutions per match, FIFA has said in a statement instead of the normal three.

However, the governing body of world football said this is a temporary step to help deal with possible fixture congestion following the novel outbreak of coronavirus.

The rule changes will be permitted in all competitions that are due to end by the end of this year.

Whether to enforce it will, however, be up to individual competition organizers.

FIFA also said that it will be safe for tournaments currently using the video replay system (VAR) to discontinue their use at the restart.

Football’s rule-making body IFAB agreed to make the change to the rules “based on a proposal received from FIFA seeking to protect player welfare”, the statement added.
