Powerful Support Boosts Gashaka Gumti National Park Conservation
The Gashaka Gumti National Park in Taraba State has received a significant boost from Africa Nature Investors (ANI), a non-governmental organization committed to sustainable conservation and community development. ANI’s Executive Director, Tunde Morakinyo, praised Governor Agbu Kefas for his unwavering support toward their conservation efforts.
Speaking at the Exco Chamber of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo, Morakinyo presented ANI’s progress report, emphasizing their commitment to the park’s effective management. He highlighted the park’s rich biodiversity and its potential to drive economic growth and attract investors to the state.
ANI works in partnership with local communities and government agencies to ensure the park remains a vital conservation area. Morakinyo expressed concerns over threats such as bush burning, illegal mining, poaching, and cattle rustling, which jeopardize the park’s long-term sustainability.
To combat these challenges, ANI has enhanced infrastructure within the park by providing solar-powered lighting, improved access to water, and the installation of an internet network with GPS capabilities. Additionally, the organization has supplied 11 operational vehicles and a helicopter to strengthen security and conservation efforts.
Beyond conservation, ANI is actively engaged in poverty alleviation programs. The organization collaborates with NGOs to empower local women with economic opportunities. It is also pioneering the construction of schools using hydraform bricks, further contributing to community development.
Morakinyo called on the state government for further collaboration and revealed plans to formalize ANI’s activities through a Memorandum of Understanding. The event was attended by top government officials and political leaders, underscoring the significance of the park’s conservation and development.
