Governor Dauda Lawal Clears N9bn Gratuity Owed to Zamfara Retirees
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has cleared N9,357,743,281.35 in unpaid gratuities owed to retired state and local government workers, some of which date back to 2011.
The governor approved the commencement of the payment backlog in February this year, signalling a commitment to reform the state’s civil service.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that N4.86 billion has been disbursed to retired state workers in nine batches. Additionally, N4.49 billion has been paid to retired local government and primary school employees.
The statement outlined that out of 3,880 verified state pensioners, 2,666 have received their entitlements, which amount to over N4.86 billion. These payments cover those who retired between 2015 and 2024.
For local government workers, 3,840 out of 4,804 verified retirees have also been compensated, receiving a total of N4.49 billion. The total arrears owed to this group was N5.68 billion, with the paid sum addressing a significant portion of this debt for those who retired between 2011 and 2021.
In total, Governor Lawal’s administration has so far cleared N9.35 billion out of the cumulative N13.78 billion owed in gratuities, benefitting 6,506 out of 8,684 verified retirees across the state.
This significant effort underscores the administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of Zamfara’s retired workers after years of unpaid entitlements under previous governments.
