IGP Vows to End Police Extortion and High-Handedness, Reassures Nigerians of Zero Tolerance for Corruption
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., has condemned the rising cases of extortion and high-handedness by certain members of the Nigeria Police Force.
He voiced his concerns during a recent conference at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, attended by senior police officers, including Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police.
In his address, the Inspector-General urged senior officers to supervise their subordinates closely and ensure they maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.
He directed units such as the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, and Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to routinely check officers’ activities across the country to curb misconduct and corruption.
The Inspector-General of Police also warned that senior officers who fail to enforce discipline will be held accountable.
The IGP issued a strong warning against officers using his name or that of other senior officers to extort the public.
He reiterated that any officer found guilty of such unethical practices would face strict disciplinary action, as the leadership upholds a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct.
Egbetokun called on the public to report any officer attempting to exploit his name for fraudulent purposes.
He emphasized that citizens play a vital role in ensuring accountability within the police force.
