INEC's Enugu Headquarters Attacked, and Vehicles Set Ablaze

The state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission went up in flames on Sunday night, barely 48 hours after an office of the commission was razed in Udenu Local Government of Enugu State, with some official vehicles also damaged.

It was discovered that hoodlums in a Mini-Bus invaded the commission's premises near Enugu State Broadcasting Service at Independence Layout, setting fire to six Hilux vehicles, five of which were fully burned. The sixth had been partially demolished.

They allegedly attempted to set fire to structures on the property but were thwarted by armed security personnel on the property. One of the rooms has some furniture burnt before firefighters arrived.

Residents in the area reported hearing gunshots around 10 p.m. but were unable to determine who was responsible for the incident.

When contacted by phone, state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Emeka Ononamadu confirmed the occurrence.

Some vehicles on the site were damaged, but the office buildings were unharmed, he said.

He said,

“Firefighters were alerted shortly after the inferno was noticed and they rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to the main office complex.”

Meanwhile, Mohammed Aliyu, the state Commissioner of Police, has ordered a manhunt for the offenders as well as the deployment of proper security surrounding the area.

The Commissioner, through the Command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, in a the statement said

“yet to be identified armed miscreants, on Sunday, 16/05/2021 at about 2030hrs, attempted to set the Enugu Headquarters of the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) ablaze but were stiffly resisted by joint security operatives who swiftly mobilized to the scene.

“The State Fire Service personnel, who promptly responded to calls put across to them, helped in quenching the fire already set on four vehicles and two cushions within the office premises.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu, who immediately raced to the scene alongside Heads of other Security Agencies in the State has ordered the emplacement of adequate security within the precincts of the office and the launch of a full-scale investigation to unravel the mystery behind the act as well as fish out the assailants.”

According to Ndukwe, the Commissioner has urged law-abiding inhabitants of the state to remain vigilant and quickly provide vital information that would aid the police investigation.

Meanwhile, as of press time, armed security operatives were claimed to have roped off the area, while State Fire Service personnel were still on the premises with their equipment.

The INEC office in the state's Udenu Local Government Area was destroyed on Thursday, according to police, due to a power surge.
