Senator Ishaku Abbo, representing Adamawa North in the 9th Assembly and Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lt – General Farouk Yahaya
Insurgency in Mubi
Mubi town has been the scene of occasional gunshots by unknown gunmen since December of 2012. Every now and then, these shootings result in the deaths of innocent or unintentional victims. It progressed from gunfire to grenades gradually. People in Mubi will immediately retreat from their daily routines and lock themselves inside their homes once these sounds are heard.
An improvised explosive device was detonated at a football field in Mubi, Adamawa State, Nigeria, on the evening of June 1, 2014 with at least 40 individuals were murdered in the incident. Nineteen other people were hurt. Another incident of the attack on October 29, 2014 was a one-of-a-kind strike delivered by the same Boko Haram, and almost everyone in town left except the elderly, the helpless disabled, the cult's apologists, and a few others who just opted to face the worst. Mubi's market day was on October 29th, 2014. When Boko Haram attacked, business transactions were at an all-time high.
The losses at numerous marketplaces, such as the livestock, grain, and major markets, as well as various street stores, can only be measured in billions of Naira.
Senator Abbo's Advocacy
Representing the Adamawa North district in the 9th Assembly, Senator Ishaku Abbo called for the establishment of a Military Brigade in Mubi, Adamawa.
The Senator made the request on Monday during a paid visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja to press for the immediate formation of a military brigade to combat Boko Haram extremists in the area.
Abbo, who personally presented the proposal to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt – General Farouk Yahaya, said that establishing a Military Brigade in Mubi will go a long way in limiting Boko Haram insurgency operations along the axis.
The lawmaker while presenting his proposal to the Army chief reflected on how in 1994, a brigade of 1,500 soldiers, including officers, was established in the town, but that it was later moved to Biu for reasons unknown to the military leadership at the time.
“If this brigade is established, it will provide the opportunity of establishing one battalion in Madagali, one battalion in Askira Uba and one battalion in Garkida town which in the long run , will make the war against Boko Haram insurgents by the military more potent", he said.
He noted that;
“Of recent, Garkida and particularly Hong Local government area of Adamawa have been attacked by Boko Haram at will. And since January 2020 to date, Boko Haram attacked those axis 23 times and we felt it’s time to end this insurgency".
Abbo while interviewed by press said;
“I saw the required political will, determination and burning desire in the Chief of Army Staff to bring an end to the Insurgency soon.“In demonstrating this , he is going to Maiduguri today to celebrate Sallah with the troops on the battle front in boosting their morale.“The chief of army staff actually promised to look into the Brigade establishment request because it is in the interest of Nigerians, bringing an end to insurgency.“As a matter of fact, my Senatorial District in 2014 was captured by Boko Haram where they declared the Senatorial District as a caliphate.“But the good thing here is that we have started today and hope this will be achieved as soon as possible,”
