Kaduna’s IGR Hits N62.49 Billion, Sets Record in Northern Nigeria
Kaduna State has taken the lead in internal revenue generation (IGR)across Northern Nigeria, thanks to Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to financial inclusion and tax system reforms.
The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) collected N62.49 billion in 2023, a figure that earned the state the top spot in the region, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
KADIRS Executive Chairman Jerry Adams credited this achievement to strategic reforms and Governor Sani’s efforts to streamline tax processes.
“Governor Sani’s dedication to automating tax collection has revolutionized our system,” Adams said.
A key element of this success is the “Pay Kaduna Portal,” an online platform where residents can pay their taxes with ease.
“This automation has reduced leakages in the system,” explained Adams. “With a simple click, taxpayers can handle obligations like Withholding Tax and Stamp Duty.”
In a shift from previous strategies, KADIRS has focused on expanding the tax net horizontally rather than increasing taxes. This approach, introduced in July 2022, has fostered steady revenue growth without putting extra financial pressure on residents.
Governor Uba Sani’s “Tax for Service” motto resonates with citizens, as visible improvements in infrastructure and services have boosted voluntary tax compliance.
“People see how their money is being used, and it encourages them to fulfill their tax obligations,” Adams added.
Adams urged Kaduna residents to continue supporting these initiatives by promptly paying Property Tax, Ground Rents, and other dues. He emphasized that the Governor’s backing gives KADIRS the potential to further boost the state’s revenue collection.
