Labour Party Denounces Nenadi Usman’s Alleged Plot to ‘Sell Out’ Party
The Labour Party has firmly rejected Senator Nenadi Usman’s alleged attempt to form an alliance with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai. Obiora Ifoh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, labelled Usman’s actions as “clearly criminal and must be resisted.”
Ifoh emphasized that Usman is not a registered member of the Labour Party. Despite her support for the party’s presidential candidate in 2022, her name remains absent from official records. “Her name is still not on the party’s register, and she is not recognized by the party’s ward, local government, and state chapters,” Ifoh stated.
The party’s leadership has consistently stated that it is not engaged in discussions about coalitions, alliances, or mergers. Ifoh found it absurd that Usman, lacking official affiliation, would attempt to “auction” the party to her former mentor, El-Rufai.
“The leadership of the Labour Party watched in awe as a one-time Minister of Finance and former member of the People’s Democratic Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, failed in her bid to transact with the Labour Party in alliance with her mentor and former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai,” Ifoh remarked.
He noted that prior attempts by politicians to engage in similar transactions with the Labour Party have all ended unsuccessfully. Ifoh warned that the party is not merchandise to be bought and sold. He expressed bafflement over individuals engaging in futile enterprises with predictable outcomes.
“We have repeatedly said that the Labour Party is filled with several transactional politicians whose only purpose in joining the party was to scramble for the soul of the party,” Ifoh added. He attributed the internal crises over the past two years to such individuals.
Ifoh highlighted that Usman joined the Labour Party in 2022 as an unregistered member and remains unrecognized by local party chapters. He criticized the audacity of individuals claiming positions without legal support.
“Today, it is becoming manifest why she forced her way to assume an illegal and ill-conceived transitional chairmanship of the Labour Party,” Ifoh stated. He suggested that hidden agendas and covert funding are beginning to emerge.
The Labour Party leadership reiterated its stance against discussions of coalitions or mergers. Ifoh questioned the audacity of Usman, who lacks official party status, to attempt to “auction” the party for her former mentor. He questioned the motives behind such actions.
Ifoh reminded Nigerians that Usman had previously taken legal action to dissolve the party’s executive structure but was unsuccessful in both lower and appeal courts. He pointed out that her six-month illegal mandate has since expired, yet she continues to occupy a nonexistent office.
In her media release, Usman claimed she was invited by a Social Democratic Party (SDP) colleague to witness El-Rufai’s defection. Ifoh found it laughable that a supposed party leader would engage in such anti-party activities.
He questioned why other opposition party chairmen were not invited, labelling her defense as shallow and unfortunate.
Ifoh urged Usman to cease playing double games, stating that her motives had been exposed. He emphasized that the party is not against individuals joining other political parties, provided they relinquish any mandates held under the Labour Party.
“If, therefore, Nenadi Usman wants to join any other political party, she is free to do so, but transacting with the Labour Party is criminal, and it must be resisted,” Ifoh concluded.
