Miyetti Allah Condemns Unprovoked Attack on Members by Lakurawa in Kebbi
The Kebbi State Chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has strongly condemned the recent activities of a criminal group, identified as Lakurawa, operating in both Sokoto and Kebbi States.
The group’s actions led to the killing of 15 volunteer security personnel, known as Yansa Kai, in Mera Town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, last Saturday.
The Association also condemned a subsequent reprisal attack by the Yansa Kai volunteers on the Indigenous Fulani people, which resulted in the deaths of six individuals and the destruction of over 185 Fulani settlements (Ruga) as well as 42 local grain silos.
The secretary of the association, Abubakar Lamido, told reporters in Kebbi State that Lakurawa is a global criminal organisation that operates freely and has advanced weapons.
The group initially operated around Gudu Local Government Area in Sokoto State and Arewa Local Government Area in Kebbi and along the borders between Nigeria and the Niger Republic.
The statement further highlighted that Lakurawa has been terrorising pastoralists by imposing forceful taxes, known as Zakkat, and, in some instances, confiscating their cattle.
Recently, they expanded their operations into Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where they extorted money from Fulani cattle rearers, collecting amounts ranging from ₦300,000 and above, totalling over ₦20 million, in addition to seizing more than 120 cows and 51 ruminants.
MACBAN has called for urgent support and assistance to the victims of the reprisal attack, noting that they have lost their harvested foodstuffs.
Additionally, the association urged the appropriate authorities to look into the incidents in detail and hold those responsible accountable.
The statement emphasised that Lakurawa should be viewed as seasoned criminals, claiming that the Fulani community is actually among the most severely impacted by their unlawful actions and has no affiliation with them.
