NEDC Trains 465 Individuals on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Waste Management
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has successfully trained 465 individuals on waste management and renewable energy, aiming to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
The initiative addresses the increasing threats posed by climate change, such as flooding, earthquakes, and wildfires, which are becoming more pronounced globally.
As the Sahara Desert encroaches into Northeast Nigeria at a rate of approximately half a kilometer annually, the NEDC has taken significant steps to mitigate these challenges and explore possibilities for reversing environmental damage.
The commission has focused on promoting renewable energy solutions and raising awareness to lessen the adverse effects of climate change in the region.
The training program, which began in February, concluded on October 8, 2024, in Yola, Adamawa State.
It was conducted simultaneously across various training centers and covered six key areas of knowledge and skills. These included:
- Climate Change Adaptation Awareness Campaign (100 participants)
- Youth Training on Waste Collection, Enhanced Scavenging, and Recycling of Waste Plastic (100 trainees)
- Use of Energy-Efficient Stoves (70 women)
- Fabrication of Energy-Efficient Stoves and Briquette Production (20 participants)
- Watershed Management Training for Professionals, Artisans, and Self-Help Groups (75 participants)
- Renewable Energy Training for Youth Empowerment Programs (50 participants)
During the closing ceremony held at the NEDC Office in Yola, Acting Coordinator Mrs. Fatima Bakari emphasized the importance of creating a protected environment in Northeast Nigeria as part of the North-East Stabilization and Development Master Plan.
She stated that the commission aims to achieve this through various environmental programs.
Mrs. Bakari encouraged participants to utilize the skills and knowledge gained from the training to enhance their personal and business development, urging them not to sell the startup kits provided.
A facilitators of the training noted that the training is timely, emphasizing the necessity of educating the community to actively participate in mitigating the effects of climate change, putting more emphasis on utilizing the startup kits for their growth and people around them.
The NEDC’s initiative represents a proactive approach to environmental challenges in Northeast Nigeria, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to foster sustainable practices in their communities.
