Nigeria Air Force Triumphs with Reactivation of 23-Year-Grounded Dornier Aircraft
The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has achieved a monumental feat by successfully reactivating a Dornier DO-228 aircraft, which had been grounded for 23 years. This achievement showcases the growing capabilities of NAF’s engineering team and their commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s aviation industry.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM Olusola Akinboyewa, described the accomplishment as a remarkable success. Akinboyewa noted that this milestone demonstrates NAF’s increasing ability to perform maintenance in-house, further strengthening the operational readiness of the Air Force and Nigeria’s aviation capabilities.
The aircraft, which had been out of service since 2001, was initially operated by the now-defunct Ministry of Mines, Power, and Steel. It had been stored at the DANA facility in Kaduna. The project to reactivate the Dornier DO-228 came after a presidential directive for ministries and agencies to transfer grounded aircraft to the NAF for evaluation and possible reactivation.
Akinboyewa explained that NAF viewed the reactivation as a unique opportunity to restore a valuable national asset. The aircraft, designated “5N-MPS” before the reactivation, had only accumulated 1,081 flight hours since its first flight, which made it an attractive candidate for reactivation.
The reactivation project for the grounded aircraft, now re-designated “NAF-039,” was carried out from June to September 2024. It involved meticulous planning and coordination. A dedicated team of five engineering officers and 40 technicians from the NAF 431 Engineering Group (Engr Gp), based in Kaduna, worked tirelessly to complete the task.
The process required the use of advanced engineering techniques and adherence to rigorous aviation standards. Akinboyewa highlighted that the project underscores NAF’s growing technical expertise, showcasing the Air Force’s ability to perform complex tasks that were previously outsourced to foreign entities.
“This accomplishment speaks volumes about the NAF’s resilience and dedication to self-reliance,” Akinboyewa remarked. He added that the success of the project has profound strategic implications for the Air Force and the country, enhancing its fleet and demonstrating Nigeria’s capacity to maintain and restore aircraft.
The reactivation also has significant morale-boosting effects. NAF engineers and technicians now have a concrete example of their skill and capability to undertake major projects that contribute to Nigeria’s national security. The project symbolizes the country’s commitment to building technical autonomy in aviation maintenance.
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, praised the 431 Engineering Group for their dedication and hard work. Abubakar emphasized that the reactivation project reflects the NAF’s unwavering resolve to optimize its resources, strengthen its fleet, and maintain a high level of operational excellence.
“The successful reactivation of NAF-039 is a testament to the NAF’s commitment to self-reliance,” Air Marshal Abubakar said. “It also shows how we are ensuring operational effectiveness and national security.”
Abubakar further noted that the reactivation of NAF-039 builds upon previous successes, such as the 4,800-hour inspection of another DO-228 aircraft in January 2024. These milestones demonstrate NAF’s growing capacity for advanced in-house aircraft maintenance, setting the stage for future projects aimed at achieving full technical autonomy.
“The reactivation of NAF-039 is a monumental engineering achievement,” Abubakar said. “It showcases the NAF’s ingenuity, resilience, and commitment to operational excellence.”
He added that the reactivated aircraft would significantly enhance the Air Force’s tactical airlift capabilities, further contributing to its overall operational readiness. The DO-228 platform, still widely used around the world, will now join NAF’s fleet, ensuring Nigeria’s continued capability to respond to national and regional security challenges.
“This achievement solidifies the NAF’s position as a powerful player in Africa’s aviation sector,” Air Marshal Abubakar concluded. “We now have the potential to lead in indigenous aircraft maintenance and technical innovation.”
The reactivation of NAF-039 is not just a significant milestone for the Air Force but also a clear demonstration of Nigeria’s growing aviation capabilities. The Air Force continues to prove that, through ingenuity and dedication, it can achieve great things that benefit both the military and the nation as a whole.
With this latest success, the NAF has proven its ability to handle major engineering projects and has taken another step toward becoming fully self-sufficient in aircraft maintenance. This is a proud moment for the Air Force, and it sends a strong message to the world about Nigeria’s potential to lead in aviation.
As the NAF celebrates this achievement, it continues to look toward the future, with plans to further enhance its fleet and capabilities. This reactivation not only strengthens the NAF’s operational readiness but also represents a giant leap in Nigeria’s journey toward technical autonomy in aviation.
The Air Force’s commitment to self-reliance is further supported by its continued investment in training and development, ensuring that its engineers and technicians are always equipped with the latest skills and knowledge. The successful reactivation of NAF-039 serves as a reminder that the NAF is always striving for excellence, ensuring that Nigeria remains safe and secure in the skies.
This development also highlights the vital role the NAF plays in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in Africa’s aviation sector. The successful reactivation of the Dornier aircraft proves that with determination and expertise, the NAF can overcome any challenge and continue to serve as a key player in ensuring national security.
The NAF’s leadership remains committed to the goals of optimizing resources and advancing technical capabilities, ensuring that the Air Force remains at the forefront of innovation and operational excellence. The reactivation of NAF-039 marks a new chapter in the NAF’s history and is a proud moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector.
