Nigeria and Namibia Strengthen Ties as Envoy Visits Technical Aid Corps Office
Nigeria and Namibia have taken steps to enhance their bilateral relations, with Namibia showing a keen interest in learning from Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps (TAC).
This development was highlighted during a visit by Namibia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Humphrey Geiseb, to the TAC office in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ambassador Geiseb emphasized the positive impact that the TAC Scheme has had on Namibia over the years.
He noted that Nigeria’s support has been crucial in various sectors, including health, agriculture, education, oil and gas, and the economy.
The envoy praised Nigeria as a “big-brother nation,” recalling how Nigerian professionals played a vital role in training Namibia’s civil and public service professionals during the country’s early years of independence.
He lauded the TAC for contributing to Namibia’s current abundance of medical professionals and educators, many of whom are now exporting their skills internationally.
Ambassador Geiseb also expressed his intent to learn from Nigeria’s best practices and explore areas where Namibia might still benefit from Nigeria’s expertise.
During the visit, Ambassador Geiseb urged both nations to renew their commitment to the Nigeria-Namibia Joint Commission of Co-operation, which was established in 2000 but has not met in 14 years.
He called for a new session of the commission to advance the mutual interests of both countries.
Responding, the Director General of TAC, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, expressed gratitude for the Namibian envoy’s visit.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to providing technical assistance to African, Caribbean, and Pacific nations.
Yakub praised the TAC Scheme for fostering technical skill transfers and cultural exchanges over its 37-year history.
Yakub assured the Namibian delegation that TAC would continue to support Namibia’s technical needs and would relay Namibia’s interest in reviving the Joint Commission to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
The meeting was attended by key officials from the TAC, including Director of Administration Amb. Yakubu Abdullahi Ahmed, Director of Programmes Amb. Zakari Usman, and Deputy Director Mrs. Meimunat Haruna Mustapha.
The Namibian delegation included Mr. Morris Sisinzi, Under Secretary at the Namibian High Commission in Abuja.
