Global Investors Rush for Nigeria’s Lithium as Demand Soars
Nigeria’s lithium is drawing significant interest from international investors, as the federal government intensifies efforts to position the country as a key player in the global green energy transition.
Speaking in a live session on XSpace, Segun Tomori, the special assistant on media to Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, confirmed the rising demand for lithium and other critical minerals.
“Lithium is the most sought-after mineral today,” Tomori said. “It plays a huge role in electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and other green energy innovations. Investors across the world are paying attention to Nigeria because of our lithium reserves.”
Nigeria has already witnessed the establishment of two lithium processing plants, with another under construction in Abuja. According to Tomori, these developments signal the country’s growing potential in the global lithium market.
“We inaugurated a lithium factory this year, and another one is on the way. The industry is expanding rapidly,” he stated.
Nasarawa Takes the Lead
Tomori also acknowledged the role of Nasarawa State in lithium mining, highlighting its rich reserves and the commitment of Governor Abdullahi Sule in developing the sector.
“The Nasarawa governor has been proactive. He frequently engages with the minister to drive lithium mining forward. He has even applied for the state to operate as a limited liability company to collaborate with private investors,” Tomori explained.
Nasarawa is expected to commission additional lithium factories by the end of the year, reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to become a global leader in lithium production.
Foreign Partnerships and Technical Support
Despite Nigeria’s lithium potential, the country still requires technical expertise from leading mining nations.
“We are engaging with experienced mining countries to gain the necessary technical knowledge. Recently, the UK’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria visited the minister, and technical partnerships were a major topic of discussion,” Tomori revealed.
Additionally, President Bola Tinubu and Minister Dele Alake recently traveled to France to explore further collaborations in mining technology and capacity building.
A Bright Future for Nigeria’s Lithium Industry
As the world shifts towards renewable energy, Nigeria is positioning itself as a major supplier of lithium for electric vehicle batteries and solar technology. With increasing investor interest, ongoing factory developments, and international partnerships, the country’s mining sector is set for significant growth.
“Lithium is at the forefront of Nigeria’s mining revolution,” Tomori concluded. “With the right policies, infrastructure, and investment, Nigeria can become a global hub for lithium production.”
