Solid waste management is a huge concern for towns all around the world. According to previous studies, population expansion will exacerbate this problem, as would concomitant urbanization dynamics and conurbation growth.

On this cause, the UK-based Christian relief and development agency, Tearfund has announced the NORAD Project, "From Trash to Cash; Turning Plastic Pollution to Economic Opportunities," on September 15th, introducing its implementation partner, Yola Renewal Foundation (YRF).

The country Director of Tearfund, Paul Mershak in his welcome address made it known that YRF, a youth-led organisation would champion the project "putting forth a template for the recovery and transformation".

"That is putting forth this part to recovery and transformation Yola Renewal Foundation is holding out a light of hope, recovery, healing and transformation for not only Adamawa State but also North-East Nigeria," he said.

Marshak added,
"that in deploying the creativity, innovativeness and inventiveness of the youths from Yola Renewal Foundation (YRF) in the implementation of the 'trash to cash' project, the first seeds are sown for the modelling of an alternative narrative, changing the two-decade image of the region as the poster child of insurgency, displacements, hunger, death and underdevelopment".

The Adamawa State Commissioner for Environment expressed his ministries readiness in implementing such a "rewarding" project that would benefit the people of Adamawa and the environs.

The event which has representations from all segments of the society were designed to educate individuals on how to hold grip economic opportunities in the waste renewal business.

According to Tearfund, turning Plastic Pollution into Economic Opportunity is a project designed to deal with solid waste in watercourses, to prevent them from getting into the ocean which is an important aspect in combating marine litter, as well as in improving health and the environment, and also creating green job opportunities for vulnerable communities along those watercourses.

Tearfund Nigeria's strategic plan includes delivering an alternative nation, waste management (converting plastic waste to paving tiles, woody waste to charcoal briquettes, and solid waste to compost), E-waste (solar installation and inverter construction), and movement building training, according to YRF Executive Director.

She expressed that her the organization would not let the Adamawa community down by completing such a monumental job that would act as a conduit for a slew of capacity-building, empowerment, and economic opportunities to the youths.
