NiMet Warns of Three-Day Thunderstorms, Urges Residents to Prepare for Possible Flooding
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms across the country from Monday through Wednesday, advising residents to brace for possible urban flooding.
According to the weather outlook released by NiMet on Sunday in Abuja, localized thunderstorms are expected over Kebbi and Zamfara states on Monday morning, with more storms predicted for Zamfara, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states in the afternoon and evening.
In the North Central region, thunderstorms are likely over parts of Niger and Kwara states during the morning. Later in the day, the storms are expected to hit the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, and Kogi states.
Southern states will also see their share of stormy weather. NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms over Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Ondo states, with more storms spreading to Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Imo, and other southern cities later in the day.
Tuesday’s forecast shows morning thunderstorms in Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states. Afternoon and evening storms will impact Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Gombe.
In the southern region, morning storms are expected over Delta, Edo, and Ondo states, with further thunderstorms later in the day across Lagos, Rivers, Enugu, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom.
On Wednesday, the northern region will once again experience morning storms over Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi states, while afternoon and evening thunderstorms are likely in Borno, Bauchi, and Kano.
NiMet advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas, noting that heavy rains could trigger urban flooding in major cities. Strong winds might precede thunderstorms, increasing the risk of damage in affected areas.
The agency also urged the public to stay informed by following weather updates and adhering to safety advisories.
Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning.
