- Raises concern over uncoordinated press events
- Highlights impersonation of journalists risk
- Calls for adherence to professional standards
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, has issued a strong advisory to politicians and political actors, urging proper engagement with the union on all media-related activities.
In a press release signed by Chairman Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim and Secretary Comrade Kissinger Bukar, the council said it will not take responsibility for misinformation arising from political events where it is not duly informed or consulted.
The union expressed concern over a growing pattern of press conferences and political briefings being held outside the NUJ Secretariat without its knowledge. According to the statement, such practices increase the risk of inaccurate or misleading reports reaching the public.
“The Council states clearly that, as a professional body, it will not take responsibility for any misinformation or misrepresentation arising from political events where the Union is not duly informed or consulted,” the statement read.
While acknowledging that politicians have the right to invite journalists to cover their activities, the NUJ stressed that such engagements must follow professional standards. It warned that reports emerging from uncoordinated events may not reflect verified or balanced journalism.
The council also raised concerns about individuals posing as journalists at political gatherings, describing it as a worrying trend that threatens the credibility of the profession. It noted that such actions contribute to the spread of false or distorted information.
“This is especially important given the increasing trend of individuals posing as journalists at political events,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its position, the NUJ Adamawa State Council said it remains committed to upholding ethical journalism and ensuring that media practice in the state aligns with established professional standards. It emphasised that balanced reporting, accuracy, and accountability remain central to its mandate.
The council further reiterated its role as a watchdog of society, noting that responsible journalism is critical to democratic development and public trust.
With political activities expected to intensify ahead of future elections, the union called on all stakeholders to respect established media protocols and work with recognised professional bodies to ensure credible information dissemination.
