OPINION: Insecurity, Security And Guides In Today's Nigeria.

Learn to take responsibilities over certain things for the benefit of everyone
Members of the Yansakai vigilante group bring their weapons into a government building as members surrendered more than five hundred guns to Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle as part of a peace process

Insecurity has become a major setback in the northern part of the country causing an increase in cases of kidnap and insurgency.

Yesterday  27 students were released by security operatives after being kidnapped in their school. The cases of kidnap are increasing in Kaduna, Jos, Katsina and other states with a lesser number of cases.

Nigeria faces an array of security challenges beyond Boko Haram. Distinguishing these threats and understanding their socio-geographic contours is essential for adapting customized solutions.

Security is the condition of not being threatened, especially physically, psychologically, emotionally or financially.

A threat is an indication of imminent danger.

Every State has a regulatory body that is supposed to protect the interest of the citizens and the affairs of the state. Where Peace fails for a place and security threats comes in, the body responsible for maintaining law and order comes in.

It is a thing of 50:50 for both the citizens and a country to work hand in hand to maintain Peace.
Security threats have become a normal thing in every part of the world but the main deal is how everyone chooses to handle the situation.
For Nigeria, we have a lot of cases like;

Banditry: What is banditry to Nigerians?

Banditry is a type of organized crime committed by outlaws typically involving the threat or use of violence. A person who engages in banditry is known as a bandit and primarily commits crimes such as extortion, robbery, and murder, either as an individual or in groups. E.g Banditry: Between Gumi and the military

Banditry violence has affected populations living in Nigeria’s Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi and Katsina states in the northwest.  About 21 million people living in these states have been exposed to insecurity from the activities of bandits.

Unconnected to the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, the banditry violence began as a farmer/herder conflict in 2011 and intensified between 2017 to 2018 to include cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, sexual violence and killings. The violence has affected about 35 out of 92 local government areas in the 4 states.

The discovery of gold mines and the activities of illegal miners competing for the control of gold reserves have served to further intensify the existence and activities of armed groups in the northwest.

By March 2020, more than 210,000 people have been internally displaced. More than 35,000 refugees have crossed communal borders to Maradi in the Niger Republic by the beginning of March 2020. These refugees are hosted in Madaou in the Tahoua region, Dan Dadji Makaou, Garin Kaka and Guidan Roumdji.

Abductions have become more indiscriminate across northern Nigeria as local criminal gangs view victims as a source of income, and the villagers — who have been ignored by the government — as disposable.

Gunmen kidnapped 140 students from a boarding school in northwestern Nigeria on Monday. It was the latest in a wave of mass abductions targeting schoolchildren in Africa's most populous nation.

The assailants opened fire and overpowered security guards after storming the Bethel Baptist High School, some 25 km from the city of Kaduna, the capital of Kaduna state, before abducting most of the 165 pupils boarding there overnight.

Nigerians are reported missing daily.

But most often, there are no records of these missing people, "it is our mandate to document these records and make it easy to find those who are lost and missing,” an excerpt on the website’s front page says.

Rape, unlawful sexual activity, most often sexual intercourse, against the will of the victim through force or the threat of force.

Justice Ibrahim Yusuf of Ilorin High Court, yesterday, refused bail to eight persons alleged to have raped and murdered a 24-year-old University of Ilorin student, Olajide Blessing Omowumi.

The security forces have a role to play, the citizens have a role to play and the Government also, for the benefit of everyone.

Children-these are minors that can't make decisions for themselves therefore are under the guidance of people that are of age(Adults).

Children should be guided by their Parents because security threats are everywhere and alarming.

They should be conscious of their children's whereabouts and activities, the kind of company they keep and the people they relate with.

Parents-Are Adults who can make decisions for themselves and guide other people in decision making.

As guardians, training children accordingly with good morals doesn't only help your image and reputation as a family, it is also of great benefit to the nation.

Taking the children to good schools, giving them the best education and home training, making them realize the need to secure a future for themselves.

Today most people that engage in criminal activities are youths, both the educated ones and the uneducated and some hide under the umbrella of unemployment.

There are many ways to earn a living. A good number of people with BSC are out there learning or doing one trade or the other to build themselves while others relax or get involved.

We don't always have to rely on the government for everything or push the blame to others for everything.

A youth that knows the worth of living well will never engage in any criminal act or wasting away on alcohol and other substances.

A nation consists of citizens and Government.
An organization or department is responsible for providing security by enforcing laws, rules and regulations as well as maintaining order.

The Government have a lot of responsibilities,
  • protect the interest of the people
  • providing security
  • Enforcing laws, rules and regulations
  • maintaining law and order.

The government should give more employment opportunities to young people out there to reduce the number of idle minded persons who are liable to find themselves doing illegal things in the name of earning a living.

The security forces should carry their work to heart in protecting lives and properties cause they matter.

A peaceful environment makes living easier. But a place full of fear, chaos and lack of unity can destabilize so much.

When it comes to protection, citizens shouldn't always rely on security forces, come up with various ways to protect themselves and their surroundings, will make everything easier.

People should be security conscious, vigilant and watchful at all times.

There are many strategies when it comes to security consciousness.

  • Watch your movement and environment.
  • Report or raise an alarm over any suspicious movement.
  • A specific style of communication between a group of people in case of emergencies.
  • Emergency exits.
  • Avoid staying out late hours.
  • Be cautious of what you say or do with others, especially strangers especially when it concerns your personal life and sensitive information about yourself.
  • Lock up everywhere once it's late and everyone is home.
  • Enlighten your children on security measures. E.t.c

But don't always rely on security operatives. They might come late or don't show up at all.

Learn to take responsibility for certain things for the benefit of everyone

Help may never come on time and may never come at all, it is left for the citizens to take a step in helping matters for the interest of all and the nation as a whole.

The rate of kidnap and other criminal acts are increasing day by day.

They say prevention is better than cure.

Protect yourselves, your surroundings and your properties.
