Notwithstanding the Powers vested in the Honourable Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Federation in instituting, taking over and discontinuing a criminal case against anyone charge with criminal offense in Nigeria, it is unfortunate that this one is happening at the time Buhari’s Government and the ruling APC are being accused of shielding corrupt persons from prosecution.
It is really exasperating to learn that the criminal case instituted by the EFCC against the former Governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje has been taken over by the Office of the Attorney General for the sole purpose of discontinuance – a deal reached with Goje before stepping down from his Senate Presidency ambition.
Regrettably, this development makes nonsense of President Buhari’s war on corruption. If anything, it portrays the Government’s claim on “killing corruption before corruption kills us” as a mere political statement not intended to be pursued vigorously with honesty and sincerity.
The rumour making rounds in the past two days indicates that Goje is seen as a stumbling block to the ambition of Senator Lawan – favoured by the APC and PMBfor the Presidential seat of the Senate and therefore, his corruption case before the EFCC was used as a bargaining tool, hence the decision by Goje to jettison his ambition and supported the APC/PMB’s candidate, Senator Lawan in contesting for the Senate President’s position.
As a loyal member of the APC and a supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, I felt betrayed and disappointed. I humbly call on Mr. President to call the Attorney General to order before he lands the President’s determination to rid Nigeria of corruption into a dungeon of mockery in the eyes of Nigerians and the world!
We must owe our loyalty to the country first before our leaders and our political parties. The action of the Honourable Attorney General has further confirmed to the critics that APC and its Government are serving as a shield and/or immunity from prosecution of its corrupt members.
The Goje’s case is capable of making Nigerians lose hope in the so-called fight against corruption and it is unthinkable that President Buhari will lend credence to this illegality which is in itself a corruption and which is obviously not in the interest of Nigerians but for personal aggrandizement of one, single individual and for political consideration.
I seriously doubt if Mr. President is aware of this development or if he has sanctioned it. As Buharists, we shouldn’t be afraid to speak truth to power and call a spade a spade! This is the meaning of being an APC member and a Buharist! We say no to any attempt to undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption!
