Police to Enforce Third-Party Insurance from February 1 – IGP
The Nigeria Police Force will begin enforcing third-party vehicle insurance requirements starting February 1, 2025, according to Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The announcement was made during a meeting with Olusegun Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), in Abuja.
A statement from Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the I-G’s remarks, emphasising the legal mandate for all vehicle owners to secure third-party insurance before using public roads.
Inspector-General Egbetokun cited Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act as the foundation for the enforcement.
“These laws require every vehicle owner to obtain third-party insurance to operate on public roads legally,” he said.
The I-G urged Nigerians to comply with these regulations, warning that violations could lead to penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or both.
Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to work with stakeholders to safeguard lives and property.
“This enforcement is not just about compliance with the law but about ensuring the safety and security of all road users,” he added.
During the meeting, Commissioner Omosehin lauded the I-G for his leadership and achievements, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Ltd.
He urged the police to provide full support in enforcing compulsory third-party insurance.
“This insurance offers significant benefits to all road users and is essential for financial and legal protection on our roads,” Omosehin stated.
The enforcement of third-party insurance is expected to improve road safety and ensure adequate compensation for accident victims. This aligns with broader efforts to promote accountability and compliance on Nigerian roads.
Nigerians are advised to ensure their vehicles are adequately insured ahead of the February 1 deadline to avoid penalties.
