The virus has emerged in Adamawa, according to the state administration, a year after the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed Nigeria polio-free.

Abdullahi Isa, the state commissioner for health and human services, revealed this during the official flag-off of the first Round Outbreak Response immunization on Saturday in Yola, expressing concern that the virus's current resurgence in the state posed a significant challenge and posed a risk of a transmission virus outbreak.

According to Isa

“One case of Circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus type 2 has been detected in the state. The situation is posing a great danger of polio virus outbreak in the state.

“The resurface of the Polio virus type 2 necessitated the immediate flag off of the first Round Outbreak Response for Oral Polio Vaccine,”

He said that the state administration, with the help of developmental partners such as WHO and UNICEF, had trained roughly 800 health workers to carry out routine polio vaccinations. Approximately one million children under the age of five were vaccinated as part of the state's outbreak response.

The reintroduction of the Polio virus, according to WHO state coordinator Iyobosa Igbinovia, is a threat to healthcare services not only in Adamawa but throughout the North East.

Mr Igbinovia noted that the WHO is collaborating with the state administration to guarantee that the virus is completely eradicated and that every eligible kid is vaccinated against Polio.
