Protests Erupt as APC Demands Obaseki’s Exit from INEC Office During Edo Decides 2024
Early Sunday morning, a dramatic scene unfolded at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Edo State. Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) stormed the premises around 3:30 AM, demanding the immediate removal of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The protesters, led by Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the APC’s deputy governorship candidate, expressed outrage at Obaseki’s presence while election results were yet to be announced. They argued that the governor had no reason to be at the INEC office.
According to reports from Channels Television, Obaseki arrived at the INEC office on Aduwawa Road, Benin City, under the cover of night to lodge complaints about alleged infractions during the electoral process. He reportedly headed directly to a location near the Edo Resident Electoral Commission’s office, where results were being collated.
Idahosa, vocally leading the protest from outside the gate, insisted, “Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. He is not an INEC staffer. Nigeria Police should not compromise.”
The protesters made several attempts to breach the gates of the INEC office but were met with resistance from security personnel. Their fervent banging on the gate underscored the tension of the moment.
Amid the chaos, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba arrived at the scene with his team. He went directly to where Obaseki was seated and subsequently escorted the governor out of the premises, accompanied by other security officials.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the Edo elections and raises questions about the appropriate conduct of public officials during the electoral process. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this protest will impact the perception of the electoral integrity in the state.
