Urgent Alert: River Benue Reaches Flood Levels, NIHSA Issues Warning
The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has raised alarms over the rising water levels of River Benue, warning that they are approaching flood levels. The agency issued updates on the situation over the weekend, stating that water levels were critical as of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
NIHSA stressed the urgency for state and local governments to implement preventive measures to mitigate the anticipated flooding. The agency’s statement highlighted the “danger signs and looming devastation” of floods that could affect states along the river.
“The water levels showed danger signs and looming devastation of the flood that would hit states along the River Benue,” the statement read.
NIHSA promised to keep Nigerians informed about the potential flooding and urged citizens to take necessary actions before conditions worsen. The agency outlined the current water levels at critical stations along the Benue Basin.
As of Thursday, September 19, 2024, water levels were observed to be rising steadily but remained within normal limits. By Friday, September 20, the levels reached the flood threshold at key monitoring stations along the River Benue Basin.
On Saturday, September 21, the agency reported a continued increase in water levels, indicating a strong likelihood of flooding in the near future.
To help combat potential flooding, NIHSA urged all Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters. The agency warned that the 12 flood-prone states must prepare measures to manage or accommodate the rising waters effectively.
“We appeal to Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to mitigate floods,” NIHSA stated.
As the situation develops, citizens are advised to stay vigilant and follow updates from the agency. Prompt action can help minimise the impact of potential flooding and protect communities at risk along River Benue.
