According to a member of his political party, a famous Cameroonian lawyer and senate opposition member, Henry Kemende, was shot dead in the city of Bamenda in the country's restive North West region.

According to Jean Michel Nintcheu of Kemende's Social Democratic Front political party, Senator Henry Kemende was shot by suspected separatist fighters in the English-speaking city on Tuesday.

The fighters allegedly shot Kemende in the chest at close range, and he was later brought to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Separatists aiming to create an independent English-speaking state in the majority French-speaking country were also blamed by lawmakers and officials.

Teachers and lawyers protested alleged discrimination by the French-speaking majority in Cameroon's English-speaking North West and South West regions in 2017, resulting in violence. Separatist organizations took up arms, claiming to be protecting civilians, as the military retaliated with a crackdown.

Kemende, who was elected as a senator for the Social Democratic Front in 2018, has consistently accused the government for failing to address the situation.

Kemende has been recognized as an inspirational figure in Cameroon by Richard Tamfu, a human rights lawyer and member of the Cameroon Bar Council.

Two other civilians, including two women, were killed by separatists on Tuesday night, according to Cameroon's military. Three other civilians, including two women, were abducted and brought to an unknown destination, according to the military.

Separatists have not claimed responsibility for the kidnappings and murders, but fighters have repeatedly threatened and demanded resignations from those they suspect of collaborating with Cameroon's central government in Yaounde.
