Senior Muslim Brotherhood figure dies in prison

Essam el-Erian, a senior leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, has died. El Erian died Thursday after suffering a heart attack in a prison hospital in Cairo.

The 66-year-old served as deputy leader of the Freedom and Justice Group of the Brotherhood and was caught in a crackdown on the leadership of the organization after being driven out of power in 2013.

He had been imprisoned in Tora prison in Cairo along with other senior figures from the Brotherhood and had been tried and sentenced in multiple cases related to the turmoil following the uprising in Egypt in 2011.

Mohamed Mursi of the Brotherhood, elected president in 2012 and deposed the following year, died in June 2019 after collapse during a court appearance at Tora prison complex.

Egyptian authorities have denied inmate maltreatment or neglect of their health.
