TAC DG Advocates Dialogue Over Protests; Commends President Tinubu’s Achievements
Abuja, July 30, 2024 – The Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (TAC), Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, has reiterated the call for Nigerian youths to opt for dialogue instead of engaging in nationwide protests planned to commence on August 1.
During a press briefing in Abuja, marking the deployment of 17 TAC Volunteers to Guinea Bissau, Buba highlighted the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in its first year, urging the public to support and understand the government’s efforts.
Buba praised President Tinubu for making significant strides in various sectors, particularly emphasizing his decisive actions, such as the removal of the petroleum subsidy and the floating of the Naira.
These measures, he noted, have saved the country over N6 trillion and aimed to address systemic loopholes exploited by a few wealthy Nigerians.
Buba stressed that Tinubu’s administration has been responsive to the needs of Nigerians, citing the creation of the Ministry of Livestock, the new minimum wage bill, scholarships for youth, and palliatives provided to states.
“We acknowledge that it is the right of every Nigerian to protest, but how do you protest when you are being heard? You only protest if the Government is not listening or doing anything about your problems,” Buba stated.
He expressed concerns that protests could be hijacked by miscreants, leading to violence, property damage, and loss of lives, as seen in past incidents.
During the event, Buba urged the deployed medical professionals to uphold the values of Nigeria while serving in Guinea Bissau, emphasizing the importance of respecting local laws.
He noted that the TAC Scheme has been pivotal in promoting Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and enhancing the nation’s image abroad.
The TAC has successfully sent volunteers to various nations in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific for over 37 years.
Dr. Mansur Aliyu Ramalan, the Team Lead and a General Practitioner, along with other volunteers like Mr. Mannasah N. Michael and Ms. Abai Edidiong Michael, expressed their commitment to contributing positively to their host country and promoting Nigeria’s image.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Amb. Zakari Usman, Director of Programmes at TAC; Amb. Mohammed S. Kangiwa, former Director of Programmes at the Agency; Mrs. Rahila Ayuba Kaura, Acting Director of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit; and Lawandy Bala, Special Assistant to the DG on Protocol Matters.
