Team USA dominates medal count

Team USA overcame China in a final-day push to the finish to win the most gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, with 39.

The United States had to wait until the penultimate gold-medal match to beat China, but with a win in the women's volleyball final, Team USA secured their third consecutive Summer Olympics gold medal.

Team USA's 39 gold medals fall short of its last two Olympic performances in Rio de Janeiro and London, where it won 46 gold medals. However, it was only one point ahead of China's 38 in Tokyo.

The last time Team USA did not win a gold medal was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. China won 48 gold medals, but the United States took home the most medals with 112 total.

After collecting 121 medals in Rio, the United States clinched the overall count in Tokyo with 113 medals, their second-highest total since the 1988 Games. Since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when the Unified Team of former Soviet countries won 112 medals, Team USA has never lost the overall medal count.
