The European Cities Set to Be the Most Crowded in 2100: New Study
- New study reveals that the European city that will be the most densely populated in 2100 is Dublin, Ireland with 65,398 people per square kilometer.
- France stands out with two cities making the list of the most populated cities in the nearest future, including Paris and Lyon.
- Helsinki, Finland is the biggest city in the ranking, spreading 213.7 square kilometers.
A recent study by Deluxe Holiday Homes analyzed over 100 European cities to identify the ones that will be the most densely populated in 2100. The study uses each city’s current population, density, and population growth rate to determine future population and density.

The city that will be the most densely populated in 2100 is Dublin, Ireland, with the expected density of 65,398 people per square kilometer. While it is the second smallest city in the list, Dublin grows faster than most cities in the ranking, with a population growth of 1.18%. Until the end of the century, the population is expected to grow 13 times.
Barcelona, Spain takes second place in the ranking of the most densely populated European cities in the nearest future, with 44,230 people per square kilometer in 2100. In the present Barcelona has 3 times more people than Dublin but takes less space, with 101.9 square kilometers. In 2100 the city is expected to house 4,5 million people.
Paris, France, ranks third, with a density of 40,475 per square kilometer. Paris is currently the biggest city in the top 10, being home to over 2,2 million people. By the end of the century it is expected to double both its population and density.
Stockholm, Sweden holds fourth place, with 40,475 people per square kilometer. The population of Stockholm grows the fastest, with 1.25% per year. By the end of the century, it is expected to grow its population by 7 times, totaling 6,7 million people.
Copenhagen, Denmark is fifth in the ranking of the most densely populated European cities in 2100, becoming home to 28,338 people per square kilometer. Less spacious than Stockholm, it currently houses a little over 794K people. Its high growth rate will let Copenhagen grow its population over 5 times, up to 5 million residents.
Amsterdam, Netherlands follows closely with sixth place and the density of 27,129 people per square kilometer. The city’s growth rate matches Barcelona but in the present Amsterdam is two times smaller when it comes to population. The expected number of residents in 2100 is a little under 5 million.
Brussels, Belgium scores the seventh place, with the density of 27,003 residents per square kilometer. Taking slightly smaller space than Amsterdam, it’s home to 1.2 million people and in 2100 will grow its population up to 4.3 million.
Athens, Greece takes eighth place, with 26,601 people per square kilometer. Athens is the smallest city when it comes to its size, with 38.96 square kilometers. Its current density is similar to Paris but the population growth rate in Athens is much slower. At the end of the century its population will become 1.03 million.
Helsinki, Finland is ninth, becoming home to 20,965 people per square kilometer in 2100. Another small city in the ranking is currently a little more populated than Dublin, but the population growth rate is much slower, 0.67%. Currently it has the lowest population density in the ranking but closer to the end of the 21st century, Helsinki will be home to 4.4 million residents.
Lyon, France closes the ranking of the most densely populated European cities in 2100, with tenth place and the density of 20,204 people per square kilometer. Similar to Athens, the city takes up a small space, with only 47.87 square kilometers. The population growth rate in Lyon is higher than in Paris or Barcelona, and by the end of the century Lyon will house 967K people.
