Tinubu to Approve Ijebu State Creation, Sparking Regional Development Hope
President Bola Tinubu is reportedly set to endorse the Ijebu State creation, following a significant meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
The meeting, held on January 5 at Tinubu’s Lagos residence, addressed the longstanding request for Ijebu State to be carved out of Ogun State.
Oba Adetona highlighted that Ijebu is the only colonial-era province yet to attain statehood, emphasizing the region’s resources, including industrial estates and a developing airport, which position it for success as an independent state.
The initiative gained momentum after Senator Gbenga Daniel of Ogun East introduced a bill to the National Assembly in November 2024, seeking to amend Nigeria’s constitution to facilitate the creation of Ijebu State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has since advanced the proposal through legislative stages.
While some critics argue that Nigeria faces pressing issues such as poverty and high debt, making state creation untimely, supporters contend that Ijebu State’s establishment could spur regional development.
Discussions about creating other states, like Anioma from Delta, are also ongoing, potentially increasing Nigeria’s states from 36 to 56.
It’s important to note that the information regarding President Tinubu’s approval of Ijebu State’s creation is based on reports from People’s Gazette, and there has been no official confirmation from the Nigerian government or other major news outlets at this time.
