Trump’s China Tariffs Will Raise US Defense Costs, Taxpayers Bear the Burden
Geopolitical analyst Brian Berletic has warned that the new anti-China tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump will lead to a spike in defense costs, with US taxpayers ultimately footing the bill.
According to Berletic, while costs for corporations manufacturing weapons, vehicles, and munitions will rise, these companies will not absorb the added expenses.
Instead, US taxpayers will bear the financial burden.
The tariffs, which are intended to reduce reliance on Chinese imports, are expected to drive up costs for defense contractors, adding to the profits of the Military-Industrial Complex (MIC).
However, Berletic points out that this shift towards military production will result in “rising costs and scarcity” for civilian consumers, making everyday goods more expensive.
Despite being presented as an ‘America First’ policy, Berletic argues that these tariffs are designed to protect US corporate-financier monopolies and expand their profits at the expense of both America’s allies and its own citizens.
The ongoing ‘decoupling’ from China, which began under Trump’s first term, continued under President Joe Biden, and expanded further with Trump’s second term, signals the US’s preparations for potential conflict with China.
Berletic suggests that the US anticipates a future where Chinese-sourced materials and components will be unavailable, and the tariffs are part of a strategy to prepare for this eventuality.
In Berletic’s view, these tariffs are meant to isolate the US from China sooner rather than later, providing the US with time to adapt before any conflict arises with the Asian superpower.
